3 Important Care Steps That Can Ensure Optimal Tire Performance

Automotive Blog

The tires on your vehicle play the important role of helping you grip the road, thus giving you ample control. To ensure they do their job correctly over the years, you need to take the following care steps.

1. Check PSI Range

Tires naturally will lose air over time, be it because of excessive wear or just temperature changes. You need to account for this loss of air, because otherwise, your tires could get too low and eventually blow out when you least expect them to.

Fortunately, checking for air loss isn't that difficult. You'll just need to find a tire pressure gauge. Use it on every tire to see what its PSI (pounds per square inch) range is. Once you have these ranges, you'll need to compare them with the optimal PSI range as recommended by your tire manufacturer. If more air needs to be put in, you'll need to find an air compressor. They're readily available at gas stations.

2. See How Much Tread is Left

Unfortunately, tires are not meant to last forever. They do indeed have a shelf-life. One of the best ways to tell if your tires have exceeded this shelf-life is to check out the tread. Tires without enough tread can't properly grip the road -- which could leave you more susceptible to losing control.

That's why you need to check the tread at least every couple of months. You can conduct a visual inspection fairly quickly. You'll simply need a penny. Place it inside the tread of each tire upside down. If you can't see Lincoln's head, you still have enough tread. If any of the head is showing, however, you'll need to find a tire replacement.

3. Have Your Wheels Aligned Professionally

After a while, your wheels can get out of alignment. When this happens, your tires won't last as long. You'll therefore have to replace them more often and spend a lot more money. You can circumvent this from happening by having your wheels re-aligned by a professional.

There are plenty of automotive repair shops that offer wheel alignment. This process involves squaring your vehicle's wheels and axles with each other. This helps them move in the same direction and thus enables your tires to last much longer. Tires are important resources that you should never overlook on your vehicle. Follow the right maintenance protocol so that they can last a long time and work like they're supposed to.
