Repairing Damage That You Didn't Know Was There After A Collision

Automotive Blog

If you have been involved in a collision with your car or truck, taking the vehicle to an auto collision repair center to repair the damage is essential. Often the damage you see if not the only damage that the vehicle has, so having a collision center go over the car and make the repairs is the best way to ensure that it looks good and is safe to drive after an accident.

Bumper Damage

Modern cars often have bumpers that match the vehicle. They are usually made out of plastic so they can be painted and shaped for aerodynamics to increase the car's fuel efficiency. Under the plastic bumper cover is a steel impact bar that many people do not even know is there. If you are involved in a collision, the scratches or damage to the bumper cover could be just the tip of the iceberg, so the impact bar under the cover needs to be inspected by an auto collision repair shop.

If the impact bar is damaged as a result of the collision, it needs to be replaced. The bar is designed to absorb impact, so if it is not replaced and the car is involved in another collision, the impact bar may not work correctly. The impact stress can travel through the frame and bend or damage the entire body of the car.

If the impact was significant, the frame might already have damage that you can not see, and replacing the bumper cover may look good, but the vehicle may not drive properly. The auto collision repair center can check the frame and the other components to ensure that the proper repairs are made.

Side Impacts

A side impact can put a strain on the frame and the suspension system of your car, bending components and even knocking the body just enough to cause fit and finish issues that you can't see. If you are replacing doors and fenders, they may not line up correctly if the frame is bent even a little.

The auto collision repair center can measure the car with a frame machine to check it and ensure it is still aligned correctly before they try to fit any new parts. You will often not be able to tell that the frame is bent visually, but it will show up in the handling on the road and the way parts fit on the car.

If you suspect there is more damage to your car than you can see on the outside, take it to an auto collision repair shop and have them work up an estimate. Estimates are often free, and the mechanic can point out any issues you didn't know were there to repair the car correctly.
