Your car's air conditioning system is an essential component, especially during the summer months when the exterior temperature can climb quite high and can make driving very uncomfortable. Fortunately, there are a few different warning signs that will preclude the complete breakdown of your car's air conditioning system. Understanding just what those signs are can help you determine when you should head to an auto repair shop to have your system serviced.
Warm Air
One of the clearest signs that your air conditioner needs to be looked at by a professional is if you notice that the air that is being blown out of the vents isn't chilled at all. Warm air can mean a whole host of problems, ranging from a refrigerant leak due to a broken hose to a failed motor or other internal component within the system. In the best case, a hose will simply have to be replaced and the refrigerant replaced, but if the compressor, motor, or another central part has burned out, the repairs can be more extensive and may require the replacement of your entire air conditioning system.
Odd Smells
Another common problem that points to issues with your air conditioner is foul smelling air coming out of the vents. This is usually caused by mold and mildew growth in the vents, which happens as condensation accumulates over time. Mold spores can aggravate respiratory conditions, and thus pose a serious health risk, which is why you should have any strange smells addressed immediately. Thankfully, the repair process is fairly simple and only requires a deep cleaning of the vents and hoses.
Poor Airflow and Odd Noises
If you notice that there is a weak amount of air flowing out of your vents, even when the fan is cranked all the way up – especially if accompanied by strange and loud noises – your fan is likely damaged or malfunctioning in some way. A loose restraint, a bent fan blade, or even a burned-out motor can reduce how well your fan works – if it is able to work at all – and can also cause loud and obnoxious noises when your air conditioner turns on. This is more than an annoying sound; any sort of grinding sound points to additional friction and wear to the moving parts within your air conditioner that can cause further physical damage and make repairs and replacement more expensive and complicated if left unchecked.
If you think your car's air conditioning could use an inspection, don't wait to take it into a company that specializes in air conditioning repair, such as Modern Auto Air.
